Cereals (+85.1%) and chemicals (+20.5%) drive their respective groups, while commodities such as biofuels register exponential growth.
The Port of Tarragona has registered a growth in total port traffic of 10.5% during the past month of September compared to the same period in 2024. Bulk liquids are the driving group this September with 1.56 million tons moved, while what grows the most are solids for rent with an increase of 29.1% thanks to goods such as cereals, feed and flour.
This general increase has been driven by the excellent performance of solids for rent and general cargo, as well as by the recovery of cruise tourism, which has grown by 19.4% in the number of passengers.
Analyzing the three major traffic groups, they all show signs of recovery, especially highlighting the dynamism of solids and general cargo.
The greatest growth is recorded in the group of solids for rent, with an increase of 29.1%. This increase is mainly due to the extraordinary performance of the traffic of cereals, feed and flour, which has grown by 85.1% in September, reinforcing the role of the Port of Tarragona as a reference agri-food gateway to the Mediterranean.
Bulk liquids, the largest volume at the Port, experienced a growth of 5.0%, driven by a notable increase of 20.5% in chemicals and biofuels. Increases were also recorded in other petroleum products (+3.1%) and crude oil (+0.1%), consolidating the positive trend in the energy and petrochemical sector.
For its part, the general load, although it registers a decrease compared to September 2024, shows some positive points. In the data accumulated from January to September 2025, the general load grows by 15% compared to the previous year.
Agri-food, steel and construction sectors lead the increases
In the detailed analysis of the month by commodity groups, September has been exceptional for several products, recording growth that has contributed to the result for this period.
Compared to September 2024, during the same period of this year, construction materials stand out, with an increase of 126.8%, led by cement and clinker, with an increase of 30,485 tons.
Also in accumulated data, iron and steel products registered a growth of 63.2% with 581,144 tons moved, driven by iron ore with an increase of 519,027 tons and steel products (+13.3%). Other traffics with a very favourable behaviour in the accumulated of the year are wood and cork (+104.8%), paper and pulp (+23.4%) and automobiles (+3.8%).
The increase in port activity is also reflected in the entries and exits of the port area, with a 6.6% increase in the total movement of vehicles at the Port's access points during the month of September.
