- The newly delivered LHM 550 has a tower extension of 4.8 metres, a reach of 54 metres and a load capacity of 154 tonnes in a two-rope configuration, making it ideal for a wide variety of piece goods and heavy cargo as well as project cargo in one of Europe's busiest RoRo and vehicle terminals
- BLG is continuing to invest in sustainable and efficient port infrastructure at the Bremerhaven car terminal, where around 1 million tonnes of high and heavy goods and over 1.3 million vehicles were handled last year
- The project is the result of collaboration between several companies, optimises BLG's handling performance and supports low-emission port logistics thanks to the option of electric drive
With a terminal area of 295 hectares and a growing volume of heavy and oversized goods, BLG LOGISTICS relies on adaptable, high-performance equipment at the AutoTerminal Bremerhaven. This makes the LHM 550 a strategic addition to the operation.
Precisely tailored lifting capacity for a high-volume transhipment terminal. Liebherr has delivered a new LHM 550 mobile harbour crane to BLG LOGISTICS at the Bremerhaven car terminal, thereby expanding the terminal’s transhipment capacity for a wide variety of general cargo, heavy goods and project cargo. The crane is equipped with a 4.8-metre tower extension to accommodate ship heights and has a reach of 54 metres to cover a wide range of applications. With ten driven axles, it can be used flexibly on site and can be operated with shore power. The LHM 550 can therefore potentially make a contribution to low-emission port logistics and thus supports BLG's goal of reducing emissions.
Supporting scale, sustainability, and special cargo
The new crane complements an existing fleet comprising an LHM 400 in Bremerhaven and two units – an LHM 320 and another LHM 550 – in Bremen. A fifth Liebherr mobile harbour crane is to be delivered to Bremen before the end of this year, further strengthening BLG's fleet. The latest delivery is the result of close cooperation between various departments, including Technology, Terminal Operations, Sales and Purchasing. This ensured that technical specifications, operational requirements and delivery processes were coordinated from the outset.
Axel Krichel, Member of the Executive Board and COO of the BLG Group, emphasises: ‘The new LHM 550 takes us to a new level in heavy-duty cargo handling and is a clear commitment to the further development of the site.’
The crane's deployment reflects BLG LOGISTICS’ comprehensive commitment to innovation and sustainability. The configuration of the machine also enables flexible handling of standard and oversized freight, thereby increasing throughput capacity.
Supporting a gateway of European trade
As one of the largest automotive transhipment hubs and RoRo terminals on the continent, Bremerhaven plays a central role in global logistics. Its strategic location on the North Sea and its integration into the TEN-T core network make the port an important hub for transatlantic and intra-European trade. The Bremerhaven car terminal, operated by BLG LOGISTICS, is an important part of this ecosystem with its multimodal infrastructure.
‘Delivering a crane to a terminal of this size requires not only knowledge of the technical requirements, but also of the entire logistical environment,’ explains Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. ‘This LHM 550 was developed to support Bremerhaven in its role as a high-volume, future-proof port.’
With growing trade volumes and accelerated infrastructure modernisation, the cooperation between Liebherr and BLG LOGISTICS reflects their shared commitment to equipping Europe's logistics centres with the necessary resources to remain competitive, sustainable and flexible.
