- Two LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes with four-rope configuration, 124-tonne SWL, electric drive and overpressure units are being delivered fully assembled for immediate deployment at berth EQ1A in Visakhapatnam, India.
- Green Energy Resources, a seasoned Indian cargo handling company with over a decade of experience, operates its own berth and handles over 3.5 million tonnes of bulk cargo annually for major industrial clients.
- The project marks a strategic first-time collaboration between Liebherr and Green Energy Resources, enhancing the port’s capacity to accommodate baby cape-size vessels and streamline bulk operations.
Liebherr’s collaboration with Green Energy Resources marks a strategic entry into one of India’s most active dry bulk terminals, where operational demands are high and berth availability is tightly managed. The project showcases Liebherr’s ability to deliver fully assembled, high-capacity cranes tailored to berth-specific constraints and rapid deployment timelines.
Strategic lifting capacity meets India’s east coast logistics growth. The LHM 550s selected for this project are tailored for high-intensity bulk operations, combining a four-rope grab system with a 124-tonne safe working load to ensure optimal material flow and reduced cycle times. Their electric drive systems support energy-efficient performance, while the integrated overpressure units protect critical components from abrasive dust and humidity. This is an essential feature for India’s coastal port environments. Delivered fully assembled, the cranes will be operational within days of arrival, eliminating the need for on-site assembly and minimising disruption to berth operations. This configuration not only enhances productivity but also aligns with Green Energy Resources’ commitment to sustainable and future-ready infrastructure. As part of Liebherr’s global delivery network, the cranes benefit from proven engineering deployed in ports across five continents, bringing international best practices to Vizag’s growing cargo hub.
Maximising berth EQ1A’s potential through dual-crane deployment
Green Energy Resources has operated at Vizag Port for over 13 years, managing a diverse portfolio of bulk cargoes for leading industrial clients. The company’s dedicated berth, EQ1A, is a critical asset in its service offering, enabling direct control over vessel scheduling and cargo throughput.
‘We are pleased to partner with Liebherr for this important investment’, said Siddharth Saxena for Green Energy Resources. ‘The new cranes will allow us to improve turnaround times and meet the growing demands of our customers with greater efficiency and reliability.’
For Green Energy Resources, the investment also opens up new possibilities in berth scheduling and cargo diversification. With two high-capacity cranes operating in parallel, the company can now handle multiple vessel types and cargo profiles more flexibly, reducing idle time and increasing berth utilisation.
The cranes’ modular control systems and intuitive interfaces simplify operator training and maintenance planning, key factors in maintaining uptime in high-throughput environments. This added versatility supports the company’s ability to respond to shifting market demands and seasonal cargo flows without compromising service levels.
The electric drive system not only reduces fuel dependency but also supports compliance with emerging environmental regulations, which is an increasingly important factor for ports operating under tightening emissions standards.
Tailored crane configuration for high-throughput bulk handling
Beyond their technical specifications, the LHM 550s are engineered to support continuous, high-volume operations with minimal downtime, which is an essential requirement for berth EQ1A’s demanding schedule. While being optimised for bulk operation, the cranes’ modular setup ultimately allows for rapid switching between cargo types, giving operators greater flexibility in managing vessel queues.
Liebherr’s regional service infrastructure in South Asia, combined with remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance tools, provides Green Energy Resources with a robust support framework. This ensures that any technical issues can be addressed swiftly, safeguarding operational continuity.
‘Our cranes are designed not just for performance, but for resilience in real-world port environments’, said Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. ‘We work closely with our customers to ensure that every installation is aligned with their operational goals and long-term strategy.’
