Cement is among the most demanding products to store and handle in the bulk materials industry. Moisture sensitivity, dust emissions, and the sheer complexity of distribution all conspire to make storage a serious engineering challenge. For more than 50 years, Idaho-based Dome Technology, LLC has been meeting that challenge head-on, establishing itself as the global authority on seamless, reinforced-concrete dome storage with more than 700 projects completed across 30-plus countries.
With a portfolio spanning cement, clinker, fly ash, coal, fertilizer, and other bulk commodities, the company’s scope extends well beyond the dome itself. Dome Technology delivers fully turnkey solutions, encompassing foundations and ring beams, reclaim tunnels, conveyor and material-handling installation, structural steel, and electrical and mechanical systems, an approach that has become a key differentiator in a competitive market.
THE DOME ADVANTAGE
At the heart of Dome Technology’s offering is the seamless, steel-reinforced concrete DomeSilo, built using a proprietary airform construction method. Unlike conventional flat-storage structures or steel-framed warehouses, the dome has no interior trusses, no seams, and no access points through which moisture can penetrate. The result is a storage environment that is fully waterproof, thermally insulated, and dustproof, critical properties for a product as unforgiving as cement.
The structural geometry of the dome is equally significant. Its double curvature distributes loads across the entire surface, enabling the dome to bear enormous weight at the apex, making it ideal for multi-level headhouses and complex conveyor systems. For heavy products like clinker, this allows a single dome to reliably store materials that would overwhelm more conventional structures.
For cement storage specifically, the dome offers clear advantages over the alternatives. Compared to flat storage, domes allow product to be stacked far deeper on a much smaller footprint. Compared to a conventional cylindrical silo of similar diameter and height, the dome stores considerably more material, because the curved walls can contain product right up to the apex rather than stopping at a flat roof. The insulated shell prevents condensation from forming on interior walls, a common concern for cement, which can clump or set if exposed to moisture while the seamless construction eliminates the dust escape routes inherent in bolted or panel-built structures.
THE DRIVE-THRU DOMESILO
While large-scale bulk storage DomeSilo’s have long been Dome Technology’s signature, its Drive-Thru DomeSilo represents a fundamental rethinking of the drive-through storage concept as it has been practised for decades using bolted-steel tanks and precast concrete silos.
The Drive-Thru DomeSilo is a tall, narrow dome, typically ranging from 1,500 to 15,000 metric tonnes of capacity, designed to receive product from a conveyor or pipeline and discharge it directly into road tankers or rail wagons via a truck spout. The system incorporates a fully aerated floor for 100% live reclaim, and all associated structural, mechanical, electrical, and control systems as a complete turnkey package. The dome’s seamless concrete construction makes it inherently more durable and moisture-resistant than a bolted-steel alternative, while its geometry allows it to store more product in a given footprint than a conventional cylindrical silo.
A single Drive-Thru facility eliminates the need for multiple mechanical systems and operators. As Dome Technology CEO Bradley Bateman has noted, there is in principle no upper limit on the storage capacity to which the Drive-Thru concept can be applied.
PROJECT COMPLETED IN TENNESSEE, USA
One of Dome Technology’s Drive-Thru DomeSilo projects in commercial cement service is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee, at a terminal operated by Continental Cement Company, a Summit Materials company, and it is a project that showcases everything the technology can offer.
Continental Cement commissioned the structure as part of a comprehensive upgrade to a recently acquired waterfront terminal. The project, completed in the summer of 2018, transformed a dormant facility into a state-of-the-art cement distribution hub. Dome Technology served as general contractor throughout, overseeing not just the Drive-Thru dome itself but also upgrades to an existing bolted-steel silo, a new barge unloader and all associated dock works.
The Drive-Thru DomeSilo at Memphis 30.5 metres tall and 15.2 metres in diameter, providing 4,500 metric tonnes of cement storage. It is supplied by barge from Continental Cement’s production facilities, with the barge unloader capable of receiving product at 350tph (metric tonnes per hour). The dome loads out at 320tph and, crucially, it can receive and dispatch simultaneously, meaning the terminal can replenish its inventory and serve truck customers at the same time. Area supervisor Dustin Whited identified this as one of the project’s most significant operational benefits.
The existing 3,000-tonne conventional silo was re-aerated as part of the same project to increase its truck-loading rate, and the barge unloader was engineered to direct product into either storage vessel as required. The in-line lump crusher on the loadout ensures that any product that has clumped during transit is conditioned before reaching the customer’s truck.
The results have been transformative. Continental Cement has used the Memphis terminal to establish itself as the regional market leader in cement distribution, a position built on the system’s speed, reliability, and operational simplicity. The system is also, as Whited noted, "basically dust free, which is important to our customers and to our community." In a riverfront urban setting, that matters.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Memphis project reflects the broader strengths that have sustained Dome Technology for five decades: deep engineering expertise, a genuinely turnkey scope, and a commitment to solving each client’s specific challenges rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution. With the global cement industry under continued pressure to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and streamline distribution, the Drive-Thru DomeSilo offers a compelling answer.
