The Port has welcomed a major new asset: a purpose-built Liebherr LPS 600 crane and hopper system, a £11.4 million investment delivered to Avonmouth after a sea voyage from Rostock, Germany. Arriving last week aboard a geared vessel, the crane is sited on Berth 6 to support bulk cargo operations.
Purpose and capabilities
The LPS 600 is designed for bulk and breakbulk handling. Initially it will handle animal feed and gypsum, and its configuration provides future capability for steel coil and other breakbulk cargoes. The integrated hopper system improves efficiency for loose bulk materials, reducing handling time and supporting reliable discharge and stockpiling operations.
Project background
This addition follows more than two and a half years of project management, planning and collaboration. The investment underscores the Port’s focus on modernising infrastructure and aligning equipment with current and future customer needs.
Operational impact
Positioned on Berth 6, the new crane will increase handling capacity and flexibility across bulk trades. Bringing a purpose-built crane from Rostock demonstrates a strategic approach to sourcing specialised equipment that matches the Port’s operational profile.
Strategic significance
The £11.4 million acquisition reflects a continued commitment to customers and future growth. Upgrading port equipment ensures The Bristol Port Company retains the facilities needed for future generations of trade and strengthens its logistics offering within the region.
