Castellón now Spain’s leading Mediterranean dry bulk port
In Spain, Port Castelló has become the country’s leading Mediterranean dry bulk port, handling 5,087,621 tonnes in the first seven months of the current year. It is also the country’s second largest dry bulk port, with only Gijon nowadays handling more
The five million tonne figure is equivalent to a 10.6% year-on-year increase. Contrast this with the Spanish port system as a whole, which saw a 2.7% decrease in dry bulk during the same period. Mediterranean rivals have not been able to keep pace, with both Tarragona (4.95 million tonnes) and Cartagena (4.66 million tonnes) lagging behind.
Castellón is Spain leading centre for ceramics and also generates significant other volumes too thanks to its industrial sector.
Commenting on the figures, Rubén Ibáñez, President of the Port Authority of Castellón, states that leading dry bulk traffic across the Mediterranean demonstrates the robustness and operational capacity of the port’s terminals. Although overall dry bulk traffic in Spain has decreased Castellón is seeing double-digit growth, he observes.
